Who are we looking for?
- University Chambers is looking for talented and motivated readers from all backgrounds. First Nations applicants are encouraged to apply.
- We understand that a barrister’s reading year can provide a strong foundation for a successful career at the Bar. University Chambers seeks to assist its readers to launch their careers at the Bar and to assist their progression after their reading year.
How many readership positions are available at University Chambers?
- University Chambers typically offers at least two readership positions each year, at least one for the May intake and at least one for the September intake. Typically, University Chambers aims to have at least 2 readers at all times. It may offer additional positions at the discretion of the floor.
What are the accommodation arrangements?
- University Chambers has two dedicated rooms for readers and has additional spaces suitable for readers. All rooms and spaces are on the floor. University Chambers does not have an annex. This allows readers to take advantage of the collegiality of our Chambers and its commitment to “open door” policy.
Can I visit the floor and view the accommodation?
- Potential applicants are welcome and encouraged to arrange a tour of the floor with our Clerk, Michael Read, at any time. We are located at Level 9, Macquarie House, 167 Macquarie Street, Sydney.
When are positions offered and when should I apply?
- In or about the first week of February each year, University Chambers aims to fill one reader position for May and one reader position for September the following year. The cut-off date for applications for positions to be filled in about the first week of February is 15 January.
- University Chambers also accepts applications received after the cut-off date, which will be considered under Chambers’ discretion to offer additional reader positions. University Chambers understands that some applicants may not have been in a position to apply for a reader position over 15 months before their intended commencement date.

Who should I submit my application to?
- Applications should be made by email to the Chair of the Readership and Recruitment Committee, Sean Docker SC (sdocker@universitychambers.com.au), and the Clerk, Michael Read (read.m@universitychambers.com.au).
What should I include in my application?
- A covering letter, curriculum vitae, academic transcript any other relevant information you wish to have considered, and the names and contact details of at least two referees that can be contacted by our Readership and Recruitment Committee. It is particularly helpful to have referees with detailed knowledge of your practical experience. Your application must specify the intake or intakes when you wish to commence as a reader in Chambers.
What happens after I submit an application?
- After an application is received, it will be distributed to our Readership and Recruitment Committee for consideration. Selected applicants will be invited to attend an interview. Interviews for the positions offered in or about the first week in February each year will typically be held in or about late January. However, interviews may be held earlier for those positions and interviews of applicants applying after 15 January will be arranged on an ad hoc basis.
Do I have to pay for readers’ accommodation?
- No, however all readers will be billed for disbursements (printing, consumables, etc.).
What are the accommodation arrangements when the readership concludes?
- Although not guaranteed, University Chambers will ordinarily invite readers to become a licensee on the floor after the completion of their readers’ year. Our preference is generally for new barristers to remain on the floor after their readership year. The Chair of the Readership and Recruitment Committee will consult with readers between 6 – 8 months into their readership year regarding their potential future on the floor. Do I need an on-floor tutor?
- University Chambers’ readers are expected to have one tutor from University Chambers, and a second tutor from another chambers. The Clerk and the Readership and Recruitment Committee would be pleased to assist new barristers in identifying suitable tutors to enhance their readership experience. The Readership and Recruitment Committee will also put new readers in touch with a junior member of the floor to assist with the transition to life in chambers.
